How to repair a punctured pool float lounge?

As a supplier of pool float lounges, I've seen my fair share of punctured floats over the years. It's a bummer when your favorite lounge gets a hole, but the good news is that it's usually fixable. In this blog, I'll walk you through the steps on how to repair a punctured pool float lounge.

Step 1: Find the Puncture

The first thing you gotta do is figure out where the hole is. This can be a bit tricky, especially if the puncture is small. One way to do it is to inflate the float and then listen carefully. You might hear a hissing sound coming from the hole. Another method is to submerge the float in water. Look for bubbles rising from the surface, as that'll indicate where the air is escaping.

If the float is really big, you can try using a soapy water solution. Mix some dish soap with water in a spray bottle and spray it all over the float. When the soap hits the puncture, it'll create bubbles, making it easier to spot.

Step 2: Clean the Area

Once you've found the puncture, it's time to clean the area around it. Use a mild soap and water to wipe away any dirt, debris, or sunscreen. Make sure the surface is completely dry before you move on to the next step. You don't want any gunk getting in the way of the repair and causing it to fail.

Step 3: Gather Your Supplies

You'll need a few things to fix the puncture. You'll want a patch kit made specifically for inflatables. You can usually find these at a pool supply store or online. You can check out our Pool Float Lounge section on our website, where we might also carry some patch kits. Along with the patch kit, you'll need a pair of scissors to cut the patch to the right size and a piece of sandpaper (very fine-grit) to gently rough up the area around the puncture. This will help the patch stick better.

Step 4: Prepare the Patch

Take the patch from the kit and cut it to a slightly larger size than the puncture. You want it to overlap the hole by at least half an inch on all sides. Next, use the fine-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the back of the patch and the area around the puncture on the float. This won't hurt the float; it just creates a better surface for the adhesive to grip.

Step 5: Apply the Adhesive

Most patch kits come with an adhesive. Squeeze a small amount of the adhesive onto the area around the puncture. Make sure to spread it evenly using the applicator that comes with the kit or a small, flat object like a plastic spatula. Then, apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the patch as well.

Step 6: Attach the Patch

Carefully place the patch over the puncture, aligning it properly. Press down firmly on the patch, starting from the center and working your way out to the edges to get rid of any air bubbles. You might want to use a roller or a hard object to really press the patch down and ensure a good seal.

Step 7: Let It Cure

Once the patch is on, let it cure for the time recommended on the patch kit instructions. This could be anywhere from a few hours to overnight. Don't rush this step. If you try to use the float too soon, the patch might not hold up well.

Step 8: Test the Repair

After the patch has cured, inflate the float again and check if the repair worked. Listen for any hissing sounds or look for bubbles if you submerge it in water. If everything seems okay, you're good to go.

Tips for Preventing Punctures

  • Avoid using the float on rough surfaces. Sharp rocks, twigs, or even rough concrete can easily puncture the float. Try to set up your float in a clean, smooth area of the pool.
  • Be careful with jewelry and sharp objects. If you're wearing rings, watches, or have any sharp items in your pockets, they can accidentally pierce the float.
  • Store the float properly. When you're not using it, deflate it and store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid folding it too tightly, as this can weaken the material over time.
